Reducing Your Carbon Footprint

The Chicago River is our home and we strive to reduce pollution and improve the quality of our waterways all the time. The future is exciting as we see bio-electric and clean burning diesel engine technology improve for use in the marine industry. There are some new exciting ground breaking technologies on the verge of being introduced in the future and we are exploring how we can incorporate these environmentally friendly technologies in our service. We are not the only ones that believe the Chicago Water Taxi is providing a great service to the environment but it was also shown by the following study.

In 2001, the Chicago Area Transportation Study (CATS) recommended the RiverBus for inclusion in the Federal Governments Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program (CMAQ). A program aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality in urban areas. CATS determined that the RiverBus provides a measurable benefit in reduction of auto emissions and auto congestion within the crowded downtown area. Wendella was awarded federal funding for the construction of a new vessel to expand the scope and frequency of the service. This second vessel was completed and placed into service in April 2002. Wendella currently operates two dedicated vessels used for the Chicago Water Taxi service. They are the M/V Alpha with a capacity of 74 passengers and the M/V Bravo with a capacity of 107 passengers. Each have been custom designed for the service and feature restrooms and enclosed seating which allows for all weather operations.

We are putting forth a great effort with our new website and marketing campaign to build awareness of our service but we need your help to get the word out. It is a fact that by using the Chicago Water Taxi service you are reducing your carbon footprint and helping to improve the environment for everyone. We believe that greater awareness of transportation alternatives is key to solving our climate and pollution concerns. Thank you for your interest in the CWT and I hope you will get the word out about our service and how to use it so we can help reduce auto emissions and improve the environment for everyone.
